Candy Basecoat vs True Candy

A true candy such as DNA Candy ColorZ™ is a transparent colour system. Its final colour is created by light passing through multiple layers of transparent candy and interacting with the ground coat beneath.

The result can be spectacular, but the transparent nature of a true candy means that coat thickness, overlap, gun technique and the number of coats can all affect the finished colour.

This is why repairing a true candy finish can be challenging. Achieving an invisible match may require very large blend areas and, depending on the job, considerably more refinishing than the original damaged area.

DNA Candy Basecoats are different.

The colour and effect are incorporated into the basecoat system, allowing them to be sprayed using techniques much closer to those used with conventional automotive basecoat.

Start With the Correct Profile Basecoat

The ground colour underneath a Candy Basecoat plays an important role in the finished appearance.

DNA Candy Basecoats are designed to be applied over a solid Profile Basecoat ground colour, and some colours require a particular ground coat to achieve the intended finished result.

Always refer to the relevant DNA Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for the recommended Profile Basecoat for your chosen Candy Basecoat.

Different ground colours can also be used creatively to modify the finished appearance where appropriate.

Mix Ratio

Both DNA Candy Basecoats and Profile Basecoats are reduced using DNA Basecoat Reducer.

Mix Ratio: 60:40

60% Basecoat — 1.5 parts
40% DNA Basecoat Reducer — 1 part

For correct application, colour replication, drying, adhesion and overall performance, always use DNA Basecoat Reducer.

Using an unsuitable reducer can contribute to problems including poor drying, delamination, colour inconsistency and changes in appearance.
